G.O. No. 245 - Q.NO (11-20) dated 15.05.2024:
The Government of Tamil Nadu has sanctioned the launch of the “Water Conservation and Management Initiative” aimed at addressing the growing water scarcity issues in both urban and rural areas of the state. This initiative includes the installation of rainwater harvesting systems in all government buildings, schools, and public institutions within the next 12 months. Additionally, the government mandates the promotion of water-saving practices such as drip irrigation and wastewater recycling among farmers and industries.
A special Water Conservation Task Force will be created under the leadership of the Department of Environment and Forests to oversee the project’s implementation and coordinate between various government departments. The task force will conduct periodic inspections, monitor water usage patterns, and ensure adherence to conservation guidelines.
The project budget is allocated with an initial fund of ₹50 crores for the current financial year, with further allocations based on progress reviews.
Awareness campaigns involving local communities and educational institutions will be organized to educate the public about the importance of water conservation. This program will also encourage citizen participation through workshops and volunteer activities.
The Government expects all local bodies, including municipalities and panchayats, to cooperate fully and submit monthly progress reports to the task force. The successful implementation of this initiative is expected to contribute significantly to sustainable water management and environmental protection across Tamil Nadu.
