The Tamil Nadu Transport Department has announced the rollout of 100 new electric buses in major cities, including Chennai, Madurai, and Coimbatore. This initiative is part of the Tamil Nadu Green Mobility Mission, which aims to reduce pollution and promote sustainable transportation across the state.
Each electric bus is equipped with air-conditioning, CCTV cameras, and mobile charging ports. The new fleet will run primarily on high-traffic urban routes, reducing noise and air pollution significantly.
Transport Minister S.S. Sivasankar stated that the shift to electric mobility is essential for combating climate change and improving public health. The first phase will focus on Chennai, with 50 buses introduced immediately, while the rest will be distributed in the upcoming months.

The government has also signed agreements with private charging infrastructure companies to ensure smooth operation and maintenance of the buses. Citizens have appreciated the move and urged the government to expand the fleet to rural areas as well.
